Composite Belts

A typical construction profile for an EFLEX™ Fluoroflex composite expansion joint is as shown below:

  • 1. OUTSIDE LAYER / COVER

    This is a fluoropolymer material (Fluoroflex) which can operate in the flue duct atmosphere at a continuous service temperature of 600ºF (315ºC)with excursions to 650ºF (345ºC).  This layer serves as a gas seal.

  • 2. TFE LAYER

    This is a sheet of skived Teflon. It is highly resistant to chemicals and functions as a vapor (gas) barrier.

  • 3. LAYER FIBERGLASS

    This layer acts as an insulator and gives the expansion joint durability and strength.

  • 4. LAYER / INSULATION

    This layer protects the cover and the vapor barrier from heat degradation. The thickness of this layer is determined to ensure that the heat transfer from the flue gas is reduced to a point less than the maximum tolerance of the cover and the vapor barrier.

  • 5. LAYER FIBERGLASS / CLOTH

    This layer acts as an insulator and adds strength to the expansion joint.

  • 6. INSIDE LAYER / TUBE

    This layer is a close weave material that binds the belt together, acts as an insulator, and gives the belt a finished appearance. The edge of this layer is hemmed and rolled over the edge of the expansion joint to form a cuff; this cuff establishes a barrier between the cover and the back-up bar. It protects the cover from any excessive heat which may be conducted into the back-up bar through the fasteners.

A composite expansion joint consists of layers of material bounded or sewn together along the edges. Each layer of material is designed to function independently of the others.

The composite expansion joint is recommended for temperature applications from 600ºF (315ºC) in excess of 1500ºF (815ºC). The EFLEX™ Fluoroflex material used as the outer layer of the composite expansion joint consists of woven fiberglass surrounded by fluoropolymer resins providing excellent chemical resistance.
